Cherry Blossom
Cherry Blossom,
Pink like the sweetest cotton candy,
Gently dancing in the wind,
Like a group of soft pink clouds,
In a peaceful state of mind.
Symbol of life,
Symbol of mortality,
Symbol of the ephemeral nature of life,
Omen of humanity.
Cherry Blossom,
Ephemeral Beauty,
You are a sunset,
You are a rainbow,
You bloom,
You amaze,
You are gone.
Pink: Simile Purple: Metaphor
2. I really like cherry blossoms, I think they are beautiful trees and I like that they represent mono no aware, this is the Japanese term that means awareness that life is short, as these trees don't live long. These trees have been used to represent mortality. I wish I could have included more figurative language, but I didn't know how. I'd like to make it longer and to use more metaphors.
Sofia--I think you have a good start, a good draft in this poem, but from your reflection, get the sense that you aren't quite satisfied that it says everything you want to say about these cherry trees, and about life being short (the "mono no aware" idea). Figurative language can help you express what you want to say. One suggestion--there's a type of poem called a "13 Ways Poem" where you have to look at something--the cherry tree in this instance, from several different perspectives. When you do this, it helps you see the trees in new and often fresh ways. You might work with that for your poetry portfolio....
